Derek McKinney, Director

 

Derek McKinney has lived in Fayette County West Virginia all his life. He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1987.He extended his education at Bluefield State College and in 1995 graduated with a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice Administration and an A.S. degree in Law Enforcement. From 1987 to 2004 he worked as Professional Whitewater Raft Guide on the New and Gauley Rivers. In 2004, he obtained a job at Mt. Olive Correctional Complex as a Correctional Officer I. After two years he was promoted to Corporal and 4 months after that promoted to Sergeant. Mr. McKinney served one year as a Sergeant then was promoted to Lieutenant where he served as a shift commander for 4 years. He then moved from security to programs and accepted a position as Unit Manager. For the next two years he supervised a housing unit at Mt. Olive Correctional Complex which housed an average of 140 adult male offenders. In October of 2012, he was hired as the Director of Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center where he is currently serving.
